Flushing of water heaters are highly recommended to maintain efficiency. Even with a water softener lime and scale can still accumulate in your water heater. With the rising cost of water heaters this is one area where regular maintenance can extend the life of your equipment Depending on your skill levels this may be something a DIY person might do themselves.  If not fully sure please use a trusted professionally licensed plumber.

We at ALL-PRO Plumbing Services, LLC recommend flushing a water heater at least once per year. If the home is without a water softener that recommendation increases to twice and maybe even three times per year. The Indianapolis and surrounding communities have very hard water and this can damage piping and appliances. If you hear popping or banging noises from your water heater chances are that’s a sign of excessive lime and scale build up. More often than not it’s almost inevitable that sediment will accumulate in your plumbing system. However, with regular maintenance you can protect your investment and get maximum longevity from your purchase

Do not drain your water heater till the unit is empty. There is a difference between flushing and draining. Sometimes draining an older water heater may damage the unit so if unsure always ask a professional.  Usually most plumbing companies will offer an inspection of the water heater with the flushing. If any potential problems are noticed this is a way to be proactive and do the  required maintenance to ensure hot water on demand.

As with any plumbing repairs or installations make sure the technician has a valid plumbing license. What may seem like an easy project if done by untrained persons may lead to damaging or improper repairs and or installations. Through the years there has been an increase of outside companies trying to enter the plumbing services such as handyman, water conditioning, and even heating and cooling companies. These companies most often do not know the local plumbing codes that are established to protect the consumer. Lastly, it is against the law.

It happens every spring, the sun breaks from the gray doldrums of winter, birds start singing, the flowers start to bloom and the grass starts turning green. With the increase of spring fever you decide to do some yard work. Dragging out the hoses and yard tools you prune and trim and decide lastly to water the flowers and lawn. This is when you turn the handle on your outside faucet and one of two things happens. Either when you go to shut off the faucet the handle just spins and continues to drip/run.  Or the ever more popular outcome is you decide to go inside thinking you’ve done a good days work and then you notice wet carpet or drywall being wet or damaged. Time to call the plumber!

It seems that somehow over the winter the hose was left on the outside faucet and it has now frozen and burst. It’s a common problem here in Indiana. Usually it goes unnoticed until spring and that’s when we at ALL-PRO Plumbing Services, LLC get an increased demand for outside faucet replacements. A lot of times the faucet may be old and need repairs/replaced but, many times the damage could’ve been prevented.  Most of the newer outside faucets are described as” frost free”, this simply means that if installed correctly when the faucet is shut off the remaining water inside the faucet drains out. This usually is enough in most cases to ensure the faucet from freezing.  However, when a garden hose is left attached to the faucet the water cannot drain properly and this is when the damage occurs.

In the fast paced and hectic world we live in often things like unhooking garden hoses fall to the wayside. We at ALL-PRO Plumbing Services, LLC totally understand this and are more than willing to repair and or replace outside faucets without judgment or ridicule. These things happen to the best of us. Hopefully this friendly reminder will help save you a future service call.

An often overlooked potential for leak and damage by most homeowners is there clothes washing machine. Many of you are aware that behind the washing machine is usually hot and cold water shut offs with a drain stand pipe. From those shut off valves typically we see black rubber hoses that take the water to the hot and cold inlets of the machine. Over time rubber becomes brittle and these hoses will become damaged and fail.

When these water supply lines fail they can do devastating amounts of damage and or flooding. Most of the plumbing systems in the Indianapolis area have operating pressures between 40 and 100 PSI. So even a little pin hole leak can add up to hundreds of gallons over an 8 hour period. To prevent this potential of flooding and damage to your home we at ALL-PRO Plumbing Services, LLC recommend you replace these hoses around every 3 to 5 years. It’s relatively inexpensive to replace these and it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Many of you may be saying this doesn’t apply to you because you may have hoses that are made of braided stainless steel.  These are a better alternative to the standard black rubber hoses but, they are still rubber inside and the recommendation is still the same 3 to 5 years replace. Also, with the more and more popular steam dryer, there is a third hose that feeds water to the dryer. If you have this feature please relay this information when making an appointment for service. Many companies will charge you additional fees for a “parts run” if they show up prepared to do a conventional washer hose replacement.

Every day we are encouraged to drink more water. No denying it I know I could use more in my diet. We all want to make the best choices for our families both financially and health wise. A reverse osmosis system might deliver on both those criteria. For just pennies a day you can have drinking water right at your kitchen sink that is at or above the quality of most store bought bottled water.

The types of systems vary but most have either a 3 or 4 filtering process. Normally we see units with   pre and post filters that are of paper or carbon. The real heart of these filtering processes is the membrane filter. The water is basically pressurized through a force through microscopic openings in the filter. This process leaves a pure form of water without any dissolved solids or particulate. These systems are usually mounted funder the kitchen sink and have a separate faucet to dispense from. They also require a storage tank to hold processed water. The system processes the water equivalently to 1 drop at a time. To overcome this depletion, a storage tank usually about 2 gallons is provided. This acts as a buffer to keep the freshly processed water ready for use.

These systems are really good economical way to provide quality drinking water to your family. In addition to that think of the impact you could have by just not having all those plastic water bottles being thrown away. The environment is impacted dramatically from plastic pollution and we need to think responsibly. I urge all our customers to consider this safe practical solution to affordable quality drink water.  After the initial installation of the unit, once per year the filters need replaced. And that can be done by a licensed plumber. We at ALL-PRO Plumbing Services, LLC have several options of R.O. systems available and would be glad to install and or service your drinking water system.

Don’t forget to provide your Pets with that same quality drinking water!

We’ve all heard the stories of somebody we know going on vacation only to come home to a major catastrophe.  A water pipe or water heater has ruptured causing a mess or even worse flood, so much for the vacation. It happens unfortunately more often than you’d think. Although nothing is 100 percent full proof these tips could help lessen the impact of such an occurrence.

We at ALL-PRO Plumbing Services, LLC suggest the next time you go on vacation for 2 or more days shut the water main off. This is usually a fairly simple process, most homes have main water shut offs inside the home.  If you have city water you can shut the water off by the meter, a well type system should also have a shut off valve if not then you can always turn the electric off to the pump. If in the event you do develop a leak on a water line or your water heater with the valve off you may still have a mess or flood but, the mess will only be the existing water already in the plumbing system and not continuously being feed by 60 to 80 PSI of water pressure.

Sometimes this isn’t an option due to people in and out of the home for pets and mail etc. There are some other suggestions like, shutting off only the inlet water valve to the water heater. Shutting off the water to the washing machine (these hoses develop leaks and or burst). Try only leaving a single sink and toilet on. By code all your sinks and toilets should have shut offs. On some occasions it is common that the shut off valves may not open and or close all the way, or maybe won’t turn, or lastly can possibly drip after being turned. These can be fixed by your locally licensed plumber. Along with shutting off water to fixtures many gas water heaters have a vacation setting on the thermostat. This will save energy while you’re gone. On electric water heaters the thermostat might be internal which may require simple flipping the electric breaker. As with any of these suggestions if you are unsure always check with a professional.

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten a call with a frantic person on the other end screaming they have water pouring from the ceiling.  My first reaction is to ask if the water has been shut off and more often than not the person on the other end doesn’t know where the valve is located. Not knowing the home I have to do a deductive process trying to guide the home owner to the valve location. All the while that water leak has been spewing water like a river from the ceiling all over the kitchen floor etc.

That’s what makes them plumbing emergencies because their occurrence is never at a convenient time. While we can never foresee the future, what we can do is prepare ourselves with some basic knowledge for when they do happen. Find your water main shut off, if you cannot find the valve a licensed plumber will gladly help show you where and how to use these valves correctly. Maybe while having other work done at the home simply have them to take the time to inform you.

While the plumber is showing you find out about gas appliances and how to shut those off as well. These are usually located by all the gas appliances as well as having a main shut off at the manifold and or gas meter outside. Homes with sump pumps should have those inspected and check the operation of pump.  If you have a battery backup system, these systems need to be tested and inspected. This information could prove to be invaluable to your home by possibly eliminating extra damages until a plumber arrives. Most response time is one hour or more from the time you make the initial call till the tech actually shows up to your door. A little knowledge on your part could keep an unpleasant situation from being even worse that it has to be. Depending on your family if your children are of the age to stay home alone, show them where the water main valve is located and have a plan that if a plumbing emergency happens while your away, they’ll know what to do. As with any plumbing system or appliance if unsure than always contact a licensed plumber.   Gas leaks are dangerous and should be left to the professionals.
